Two South End Gardeners Win Mayor Menino's Garden Contest 2012

Mayor Menino's Garden Contest is a citywide celebration of urban gardening presented by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and sponsors JetBlue and the Boston Herald.

Once again two gardeners from the green neighborhood of South End have won  Mayor Menino's 2012 Garden Contest. 
Launched 16 years ago as part of Mayor Menino’s citywide beautification initiative, the contest recognizes gardeners who have landscaped, planted flowers, trees, and shrubs, and, in the process, helped beautify Boston’s neighborhoods.

Timothy Haynes owner of Blade Barbershop at 603 Tremont Street won 1st place in business store front category, for his is front garden, back alleyway which leads you to the  back yard with a large variety of plantings deck & a large koi pond.   

John Marino of Berkeley Community Garden won 1st place in the  community garden category for his color and style garden with stone walkways ,pergola, custom storage shed, granite seating area with covered trellis ,veg garden & koi pond ,he also won 1st place in 2010

First place winners in each of ten categories will receive the “Golden Trowel” award from Mayor Menino and prize packages from the Parks Department, Comcast, Mahoney’s Garden Centers of Brighton, and other sponsors at the televised awards ceremony August 28,2012  at 5:15 p.m. in The Public Garden.

All finalists in this year’s Garden Contest will also be entered into a drawing for a JetBlue Grand Prize consisting of a trip for four to the Epcot International Flower & GardenFestival in spring 2013 in Orlando, FL. The trip includes airfare and a three night stay with admission to the Epcot Theme Park, which hosts the International Flower & Garden Festival each year.
