Do You Want Large-Scale Rooftop Gardening In The South End?

A new "green" business might come to the neighborhood, and we want your initial reactions.

Two entrepreneurs want to bring rooftop gardening to Boston and they're checking out the South End for one of their first sites, according to this article in the Boston Herald.  

The company is called Higher Ground Farm, and business owners John Stoddard and Courtney Bissonnette would be using rooftop space to grow vegetables and herbs in 2012 and maybe even add chickens, rabbits, and have an apiary for bees in 2013.  

Higher Ground Farm says on their website that:

Productive green roofs provide several benefits to the building owner and function in the urban landscape on multiple levels as they:

  • Make use of an unused space with few competing uses,
  • Reduce heating and cooling costs for building owners,
  • Triple the life of the existing roof,
  • Reduce the urban “heat island” effect,
  • Increase permeable surface, thereby retaining storm water,
  • Attract positive attention to the building and neighborhood,
  • Produce fresh, healthy produce!

They're currently looking at sites in both Charlestown and on top of buildings in the South End's Newmarket Square, but is there any place they wouldn't be welcome, or a rooftop in particular that could use some greening up? Add a comment and let us know whether you think this could be a positive addition to the neighborhood.
