Weather forecasters are predicting at least three to six inches with rain mixed in.
Will the South End see six inches of snow this weekend, or will we see more like three inches with rain mixed in? Saturday's storm is proving to be a tricky one for area forecasters to get a hold on. Although it's not supposed to dump anywhere near the levels of precipitation Nemo did two weeks ago, it could drop significant rain or snow depending on where and when temperatures cross the freezing point. At the moment, Boston lies right on the projected rain/snow line, meaning we could get less than an inch of snow or several inches. As of late morning Friday, the National Weather Service was predicting an inch or less of wet snow in Boston, but maps issued by the service put Boston in an area that could get a few inches. Forecasters seem…

After days of wildly different predictions, the area's forecast is beginning to take shape for Feb. 23-24.
All the experts agree: It’s going to snow in Boston this weekend. But how much and when the snow will start seems to be up in the air. Depending on whose map you used on Wednesday, Boston was in for either a few inches or a foot of heavy, wet snow. By Thursday morning, however, all of the local news broadcasts started to fall in line on the same theme: The rain will linger along the coast and spare Boston from the heaviest snowfall totals. Here’s a look at the forecasts from the different local news station meteorologists. All these totals were updated Thursday morning: WHDH (7 News): 4-8 inches WLVI (NewsCenter 5): 4-8 inches WBZ (CBS Local): 4-8 inches WFXT (MyFox Boston): 4-8 inches along the immediate coast, but a potential for over a …

The Boston area down to Providence could see 1-2 feet of snow on Friday into Saturday.
The National Weather Service’s winter storm alert issued earlier today has been replaced with a “Blizzard Watch,” in effect starting Friday morning. “A potential historic winter storm and blizzard is expected to drop one to two feet of snow across much of the region Friday into Saturday,” the National Weather Service alert states. The watch affects much of eastern Massachusetts, including the Boston area, as well as northern and central Rhode Island, and runs Friday morning into Saturday afternoon. Temperatures will be in the mid 20s. The National Weather Service is forecasting “heavy snow with the potential for blizzard conditions and accumulations of 12 to 24 inches.” Light snow is expected to develop by Friday morning, increasing in …
The latest estimates from the National Weather Service warn of heavy snowfall on Friday into Saturday.
A major winter storm will move into the Boston area on Friday into Saturday, potenially dumping one to two feet of snow on Boston this weekend. A weather service snowfall total forecast map released late this morning shows 14 to 18 inches falling in the Boston area. "A major winter storm will bring the potential for a foot or more of snow across much of the region Friday into early Saturday," said the winter storm warning from the National Weather Service. Light snow will develop on Friday morning, and snowfall will increase to become heavy on Friday afternoon then taper off on Saturday. "Deep snow accumulations are likely on untreated roads," according to the NWS. "In addition, strong winds may develop to create near blizzard conditions …

If you notice anyone in immediate danger as a result of the extreme cold, notify public safety officials by calling 9-1-1.
Temperatures in Boston will go from extremely cold to extremely colder this week, and the city of Boston is urging residents to take care of themselves and look out for others during single-digit temperatures. On Thursday, daytime temperatures could reach negative 9 degrees with wind chill, and overnight temperatures are expected to be 7 degrees with a windchill of negative 7 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. “We were fortunate to have a mild winter last year, and we want to make sure people are safe now that we’re seeing extremely cold weather in Boston again,” Mayor Menino said. “I’ve asked everyone to be vigilant over the next few days and to keep an eye out for any neighbors in need. There is plenty of warm shelter …

The coldest air of the winter is moving in on Wednesday, but expected to move out by the weekend.
The coldest air of the winter to date - by far - is moving in to Boston on Wednesday. Windchills are expected to be close to zero on Wednesday morning and possibly below zero on Thursday morning, which will be the coldest day since last February. The National Weather Service said that Wednesday morning's low temperature would be about 10 degree and Thursday morning's low temperature will be about 7 degrees with a wind chill of -2 degrees. The windchill temperature on Wednesday morning will be near 0, according to WHDH Chief Meteorlogist Pete Bouchard in his most recent blog, because of "a steady (not strong) breeze." "And although Thursday morning is colder, there isn't a lot of wind," he said. "Sun will dominate the short term forecast …

A second storm is headed to the area and could make driving hazardous on Saturday. How much snow will we see in the South End?
A second storm of the week is headed toward New England and will dump more snow onto the area on Saturday. 7News meteorologists are predicting Boston will get between 2 to 4 inches of snow in the storm that is expected to start on Saturday afternoon and spread into the early hours of Sunday. Sunday morning will start out dry, but light snow will start to arrive around noon then continue into Saturday night. On Sunday, say hello to winter. Temperatures will remain in the 20s with a serious wind chill into the teens. The good news is that snow removal on Saturday and Sunday shouldn’t be a backbreaking endeavour. CBSBoston’s Todd Gutner said the snow will be “dry and fluffy for most,” though he warned that driving could be hazardous at …

The large winter storm that dropped inches of snow in the South is headed for Boston, although no snow accumulation is expected in the city.
The large winter storm that dropped inches of snow in the South is now headed towards the northeast, although no snow accumulation is expected in Boston. According to the National Weather Service's latest forcast, several inches of snow are expected to fall in the western part of the state on Wednesday night, but with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees in Boston, the snow is expected to change over to rain or icy rain in the city. The National Weather Services has issued both a hazardous weather outlook and a high wind watch for the Boston area Wednesday night into Thursday. Winds heading northeast could reach 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph, with potential to bring down power lines. "Winds of this magnitude could down trees and tree …

Expect mostly rain in the city and snow outside of 495.
A nor'easter will kick up winds and rain in Boston and the rest of the region today, with sleet and snow likely west of Boston and in the higher elevations. According to WHDH meteorologist Chris Lambert, the precipitation should start between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., which would impact the afternoon commute. Atmospheric conditions may convert falling rain into snow in Boston, though that would mean merely a dusting on grass before quickly melting away. The actual rain/snow line is harder to predict. "I don't expect much, if any accumulation in the Boston area, maybe a slushy coating around Rte. 128 on grassy surfaces as rain and snow battle it out for a few hours in the early evening," wrote Lambert on the 7 Weather Blog. "The snow will lose …

The storm could drop 1 to 2 inches of rain late Wednesday into Thursday and bring wind gusts along the coast.
A little more than a week after 'superstorm' Sandy swept through Massachusetts, South End residents may have to brace for another windy, rainy night on Wednesday. A nor'easter could blow into the area mid-week and the storm could drop 1 to 2 inches of rain from Wednesday into Thursday, according to WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Rainer. Rainer also wrote that coastal winds could gust between 40 and 60 miles per hour along the South Shore, Cape Cod and the islands, although winds "will be much lighter inland with this storm." The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a hazardous weather outlook statement on Sunday afternoon, saying that strong to damaging northeast winds are likely especially across Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island late …
