South End Senate Primary Results

Gomez, Markey get the most votes in the South End's precincts.

The voting in South End precincts for the 2013 U.S. Senate special primary elections Tuesday reflected the preferences of the state overall, with Democratic winner Edward Markey and Republican winner Gabriel Gomez taking the most votes. There was relatively low turnout overall in the South End's precincts (Boston's Ward 4, Precincts 1-4, and Ward 5, Precincts 1, Ward 8, Precincts 1 and 2, and Ward 9, Precinct 2). There were just shy of 2,500 votes in the Democratic primary while about 200 votes were cast in the Republican primary. Gomez and Markey will square off in the general election to fill the seat vacated by John Kerry June 25. The below results are unofficial, from the city of Boston: SOUTH END PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail …

The precincts in the article are the ones listed by the city of Boston as "officially" in the South End. There are other precincts that contain parts of the South End neighborhood, but also parts of other neighborhoods. I can't separate the results out by technical neighborhood borders. But for your reference results from: Ward 8, Precinct 2: Democrats: Markey: 84.38%, Lynch: 14.84% Republicans: …   more ›

Gomez to Face Markey in Senate Election

The former Navy SEAL and the longtime Congressman will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.

A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Gomez defeats his more seasoned opponents, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan of Abington and state Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. Markey beat fellow U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston. Brett Rhyne of Needham ran an …

Lynch Announces U.S. Senate Run on Facebook

Stephen Lynch posted a YouTube video this morning with his announcement.

While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later this afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. Lynch would be the second Democrat running for the unexpired term left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to Secretary of State earlier this week…

Gov. Patrick Names William “Mo” Cowan Interim Senator

Markey is in, Lynch is set to make an announcement Thursday and Brown is reportedly considering throwing his hat into the race following Tuesday’s nomination of John Kerry as Secretary of State.

With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Governor Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down this month and returning to the private sector. Besides being Patrick’s former chief of staff, Cowan also served as chief legal counsel to Governor Patrick, having served in the Patrick-Murray …

Poll Results: Readers Speak Out About Brown/Warren Controversies

Indian claim stirs outrage among some Patch readers against US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.

The controversy over US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren's claim to be part Native American is not going over well with Patch readers in the Greater Boston area, according to an unscientific Patch poll. As of Thursday morning 52 percent of the 304 Patch readers who took our unscientific poll said they believe US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is more of a hypocrite than incumbent Republican US Senator Scott Brown. Meanwhile some 19 percent who took the poll said they believe Brown is more of a hypocrite for voting against President Barack Obama's health care law while taking advantage of a key provision in it: the provision that allows him to keep his elder daughter on his congressional health insurance plan. 30 Comments Left on May 3 …

Warren Campaign Beefs Up War Chest in First Quarter of 2012

She has raised more money so far in 2012 than incumbent Republican Sen. Scott Brown, her campaign says.

The following is a release issued by the campaign of Elizabeth Warren  With final fundraising numbers still being completed, early comparisons show Consumer Advocate Elizabeth Warren has outraised incumbent Republican Senator Scott Brown in Massachusetts during the first quarter of 2012.  "Elizabeth knows that powerful interests are lining up against this campaign, and she is committed to building the strong grassroots army that's needed to win," campaign manager Mindy Myers said. "More than 30,000 people from 350 towns across Massachusetts have made contributions to power Elizabeth's fight for middle class families, and we're grateful for their support."  Elizabeth Warren’s campaign raised $2.5 million from Massachusetts donors, bringing …
