Fashion Trend: Simplicity

Proof that simple can be anything but boring.

Local photographer Brendan is the picture of simplicity in this outfit, with clean lines and perfect fit rounding out the look. He's inspired fashion-wise by blogs Yimmy's Yayo and The Sartorialist. Here he's sporting an H&M shirt, Levi's and Generic Surplus shoes.

Fashion Trend: Urban Vamp

A fine mix of sultry and tough.

I first spotted Shannon's vibrant red hair and knew I had to stop to talk to her. I was equally charmed by her nod to the 90s in the form of Doc Marten combat boots. She says she tends to jumble many different eras and looks together, recently citing "Courtney Love's video for 'Doll Parts,' 60s heavy winged eyeliner, and 40s/50s vamps" as inspiration. Here she wears a Target vest, skull necklace and tank from H&M, antique amber pin that belonged to her great aunt, Forever 21 skirt, and boots from Second Time Around.

Fashion Advice: Dress for Your Body Type

Defy the trends and still look amazing.

When Liz, who owns the Chatham store The Artful Hand Gallery walked by me, I was immediately drawn to her unusually-printed dress. She said she feels it's important to dress for your body type, no matter what the trends dictate. She named "Victorian, Classic, Military, and Steampunk" as styles she is inspired by. Here she wears a dress from Urban Outfitters, bag by Dries van Noten, shoes by Robert Clegerie, necklace from her store by the Seattle-based jewelry designer Jamie Joseph, and Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses.

Trend For Summer: Flower Prints

Don a cotton flowered skirt... and twirl around in it!

I spotted Ashley, (a South End seamstress who works for the local company Elemental Threads) and stopped to ask about her "vintage" style.  I soon found out her skirt was a modern Anthropologie skirt, yet it was quite obvious the skirt's designers had borrowed heavily from fabric designs from the 1950s. Not coincidentally, Ashley named both 1950s pin-up girls and housewives as the main inspiration for her looks. Here with her on-trend bright floral skirt she wears a Betsey Johnson necklace and bag, Old Navy tank top, belt from Buffalo Exchange, Target sunglasses,, and shoes from DSW.

Fashion Trend: Utilize Vintage Textiles

They don't design prints like they used to.

I discovered graphic/textile/jewelry designer Amanda while she was out on a sunny day in the South End. What intrigued me most about her look was her fantastic zebra-print pants which are vintage and were snatched up at Great Eastern Trading Company in Central Square in Cambridge. Amanda is inspired by fashion blogs and "zany vintage pieces with wild prints." Here she pairs her "wild" pants with a hat that her Mom passed down to her, a shirt from Artifaktori in Davis Square Somerville, b.o.c. by Born shoes, and a necklace she made herself from a vintage jeweled safety-pin and three old chandelier crystals.

Flea Market Styling

How to look anything but boring.

I stopped local artist Amanda mainly to ogle her fabulous gold shoes. Her outfit is perfect for a temperate Sunday afternoon of flea marketing. She says she often raids a pile of goodies that used to belong to her grandmother and uses those pieces to add funk to her outfits. She aims to never "look boring." Here she wears vintage plastic dangle earrings, an Anthropologie jacket, vintage scarf from her grandmother, Diesel jeans, and gold Sperry Topsiders.

It's Suddenly Summer: The Last Spring look

Alexander shows off the last of this year's Spring style.

I found Alexander combing the racks at the infamous clothing shop Bobby From Boston and liked the mix of layers he used to protect himself from the Spring rain and cold. Alexander's work as a fashion designer provides him with ample inspiration. He leans toward androgynous lines and describes his style "as if Commes de Garcons did '90s grunge." Here, he wears a Pleasure Principle shirt with attached scarf collar, a Theory cardigan, vintage jacket, Prada watch, American Apparel riding leggings and Frye harness boots.

Fashion Trend: Spring Bohemian Style

Pair layered tops with shorts for a perfect spring look.

I spotted local fashion blogger Nicolle out walking her dog Gary and had to stop and snap a picture of her cute Bohemian ensemble. She says she gets her inspiration from California-based fashion blogs like Rumi Neely's fashiontoast. Here, Nicolle wears a silk chiffon blouse, a fringed vest by Miley Cyrus & Max Azria, shorts from H&M, boots found in Italy and sunglasses from Urban Outfitters.

Fun Trend: Antique Clothing Mixed with New

Antique, thrift store, and modern all rolled into one outfit.

I spotted this lovely and eccentric outfit on Kjersti while she stood in line at the cupcake truck at last Sunday's SoWa Market. The rain did not hinder her clothing choices, which she describes generally as "what Jane Birkin would wear had she been born in 1890." Here Kjersti, a stand-up bass player and aspiring milliner, wears an antique top hat scored on eBay, vintage fur wrap, lace dress found at a thrift store in NYC, necklace from an Etsy shop called FableAndFury, 1901 spoon bracelet picked up at SoWa, belt from H&M, American Apparel leggings, shoes from Forever 21 and a bag from Urban Outfitters.

Spring Style at SoWa

Graphic touches prove less is more.

I spotted designer Aimee at this year's first SoWa Open Market. She wore a fabulous outfit that was both elegant and sporty. Aimee says she reads Dutch Glamour and Vogue Italia to help inspire her fashion choices. Here, she pairs a vintage Levi's men's  jacket, Levi's striped shirt, Monki belt, and Jack Purcell sneakers.
