SoWa will be the place to be on Sunday, as the annual open market opens for the 2013 season and artists open their studios.
The birds are chirping, the sun is out, and if that weren't enough, the spring is about to get that much sweeter in the South End with the opening weekend of the SoWa open market and the annual SoWa Art Walk kicking off this Sunday. The SoWa Open Market is promising to be even bigger and better this year, in its several venues: the open air market with a farmers' market, a vintage market and its food trucks. Organizers say there will be more than 100 vendors at the crafts market, 70 vendors at the farmers market and 40 food trucks this year. You can see a list of all the food trucks here. The 2013 SoWa Open Market will feature its usual open market, vintage market and farmer's market, and this year, will include an expanded lineup of food trucks, featuring more than 35 different food vendors and restaurants on wheels. Even though the main open market is done for the season, the SoWa vintage market and the food truck court will live on throughout the winter.
Although the South End's SoWa Open Market is done for the season, the vintage market and the food truck court on Harrison Avenue will continue on year-round, according to information on the SoWA Facebook page. The main open market ended on Oct. 28th with the "Market of the Living Dead," when patrons were encouraged to come in zombie costumes and compete for costume prizes. The vintage market has continued on, tucked inside the warehouse located at 460C Harrison Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Sunday. The SoWa Open Market is opening this weekend for the season, and we're wondering what you've been waiting for the most.
There's art at the SoWa Open Market. Not just any art, either, like a person might see at a museum. This is art you can buy. Art you can take home. And there's food, everywhere. Some of it even comes from trucks, trucks that have journeyed to the SoWa Open Market for the express purpose of filling your belly. There are dogs at the Market, and babies, and iced coffee and special events, and an entire indoor market of vintage finds, but, of the thousands of items at the market, what are you looking forward to most? The ensuing ability to find footing in unfamiliar environments informs her sense of style as a designer, interior artist and refurbisher: Freeman is the Queen (Duchess?) of mix-and-match. Her anything-goes philosophy is plenty refreshing in an age when you can buy matching bedroom scheme packages cheaply at Walmart and Target. After years of nurturing a hobby, Porter realized it could also be her career...
As a kid, Shara Porter was obsessed with dryer lint. “I would always ask to clean out the lint tray to see what the clothes had made,” she told me. “It amazed me to see all of the residue combining to form new fabric--well, at the time it just amazed me, but looking back on it, that’s how I feel.” That same wonderment and knack for transformative thinking led to other telling childhood adventures: at the ripe age of 4, the Princeton, New Jersey native repurposed a pair of her mother’s blue jeans into a shoulder bag, following along with the kids on PBS’s “Zoom”. Patti Small grew tired of the glitz and glamour of the movie business about three years ago. She worked in the reasonably lucrative field of movie business accounting. “I couldn’t stand it,” Small said. So she opted for happiness rather than money and took up a hobby that she hopes will someday become “something real” that can support her. Small operates On the Edge Knife Sharpening, a business that allows her to travel to farmers’ markets throughout the area hand sharpening everything from kitchen knives to dog grooming shears. The 3-year-old business allows Small to work with her hands – a goal she had when she left the movie business – and spend time getting to know the customers and vendors who frequent the farmers' markets she attends…

Murrell says his love for pottery grew after connecting with some cultural roots as a kid.
Artist and craftsman Nathan Murrell loves to work with his hands. A native of Belleville, Illinois (just across the river from St. Louis, Missouri), he attended Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) and eventually landed here in New England for grad school at UMass Dartmouth…both degrees are in ceramics. Currently he divides his time between his Hijacked Ceramics business and a bookbinding gig with Rag and Bone Bindery.
