Family fun, ice sculptures, musical performances and more.
From the Waterfront to Fenway, Shakespeare to Indie rock, family celebrations to fireworks on the Common, Boston's 2013 First Night celebration has it all, and then some. The city's 37th annual festival features world class performances of art, music, film and dance, and showcases more than 1,000 artists and 200 exhibitions. Events will take place Monday from noon to midnight all over Boston. All First Night outdoor events are free, but buy an $18 button (children under 4 are free) for access to all indoor events, and be sure to check out the whole schedule online. One of First Night's signature spectacles is the carving of magnificent ice sculptures at Copley Square and Boston Common. Patch was there for the carving and later capturing them at their most brillant, lit up for New Year's Eve.

After a day filled with performances, exhibits and merrymaking, tens of thousands festive Bostonians took to the street on New Year's Eve to party with a grand procession and watch the city's spectacular firework display over the Boston Harbor.

The following information is from the Boston Transportation Department: Boston Transportation Commissioner Thomas J. Tinlin is advising drivers that parking and traffic restrictions will be implemented in Downtown Boston on Saturday, Dec. 31, due to the city’s annual First Night activities. The use of public transportation is strongly encouraged. Those who feel the need to drive in should plan to park in off-street lots and garages. Public safety is Boston’s first consideration. Cars parked in violation of any of the city’s basic public safety regulations, such as at hydrants, within 20 feet of an intersection, in crosswalks or at handicap ramps, will be subject to towing. Menino held his annual First Night public safety conference, encouraging people to come to Boston to ring in the New Year during Boston's 36th Annual First Night celebration.
