Winter Farmer's Markets in Boston and Nearby

Fresh, local produce is closer than you think - even in the winter.

There are many reasons to shop at a local famer's market. Supporting your local economy and business owners, getting food right from the source with all of its vitamins and minerals, and avoiding negative effects on the envionrment associated with shipping, packaging and storing food over long distances.  It's a misconception that here in New England, everything shuts down during the winter. There are actually several winter farmer's markets in the city and in neighboring cities and towns worth checking out for your fresh food fix.  Unfortunately for South End residents, this year's SOWA market and the Prudential market are both closed for the winter 2013 season. The Tomato Bonanza Just Keeps Coming

Recipe: Roasted late harvest tomatoes with basil and freshly shaved parmesan.

While summer is officially over, the tomato bonanza just keeps coming. The late harvest grape, cherry and plum tomatoes are incredibly good this year, and the tomatoes I recently found from Silverbrook Farm were stunning. These tomatoes caramelize wonderfully with just a touch of garlic and some good quality olive oil. The addition of some freshly chopped basil and shaved Parmesan, creates a sweetly succulent mixture that goes well with whole wheat pasta, or simply spooned onto grilled french bread.  Partner with a Dolcetto, especially the 2007 Abbona Dogliani which can be found at The Wine Emporium on Tremont Street.
