PHOTOS: South End Open Studios

Do you have photos from the South End Open Studios this past weekend? Add them to the gallery.

This past weekend, the artist community of the South End opened its doors to the public, giving art enthusiasts and South End residents a chance to see inside the working studios of more than 200 established and emerging artists. The weekend-long South End Open Studios, put on by the United South End Artists, took place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in virtually every neighborhood in the South End.  "It's a chance for people to really see the artists in their workspaces and explore the roots of the South End," said Jenn Sherr, a board member at the USEA. "Artists actually moved into this neighborhood long before it was developed. It's an opportunity to see these old warehouse buildings and lofts where …

Boston Ballet Launches New Program at South End Headquarters

It's time to "re-think ballet," according to the show's director.

It's true, ballet isn't appealing to everyone. But a new self-aware production by Boston Ballet at its South End headquarters hopes to change that by making ballet more accessible to all through a lecture-performance-event series. The series, called BB@home, is designed to appeal to new audiences beyond the traditional ballet crowd.  “We encourage the public to ‘re-think ballet’, and experience this evolving art form with an open mind," said Boston Ballet Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen. "“The BB@home series opens the door to audiences who may not have considered ballet accessible or relevant to their lives." The series kicks off on Wed. Aug 29th at the 19 Clarendon Street headquarters with a preview of the Boston Ballet Company's tour to…

South End Educator Honored as Early Childhood Innovator

United South End Settlements' pre-school Arts Enrichment teacher Helen Schroeder was recently honored by the Boston Association for the Education of Young Children.

When most teachers speak of “getting their hands dirty” it is meant as a metaphor. When award-winning early educator Helen Schroeder uses those words she is speaking quite literally. A peek inside Schroeder’s art classroom, on the third floor of United South End Settlements’ (USES) Rutland Street schoolhouse, may reveal many things not readily associated with education—like a bin full of living earthworms and sliced vegetables strewn over a light board. There are troughs of colored water. Painted artwork covers a large portion of the walls. This is a hands-on classroom. Digging through soil with bare hands, she produces several worms and places them on the floor in front of some of the kids, who all indicate approval with squeals of …

Helen: What a honor to know someone like you actually teaching those little people. There was no such thing in my town for education in school before 1st grade. Just parents and I was lucky to have a teacher at home. Many kids don't. Continued success in your field, Helen. and Congratulations! You are unique. Peggy Agan   more ›

Culture Bomb: The Howard Yezerski Gallery

The first installment in a recurring series that will profile some of the South End’s best art galleries.

Gallery owner Howard Yezerski has showcased contemporary art in several Boston neighborhoods through the years, but his current location, in the South End’s SoWa district is his favorite. “There is no other place like this in Boston,” he said, looking out the large glass windows of the gallery’s office at the newly pink blossoms of Thayer Street’s tree-lined, brick adorned walkway. “There are a lot of businesses who’ve been down here forever. It’s an established area. It’s the best location I’ve seen.” The gallery showcases a mix of new and established artists, and, according to Yezerski, the best way to describe the art on display would be contemporary. “Most of our artists are still alive,” he points out. The gallery will open a new …

Get Inspired! Battle of the Bands Deadline is Tomorrow!

We've dug up a few relatively obscure songs written about the South End to help get you in the mood to put the finishing touches on your video submissions!

With the deadline for our Battle of the Bands contest rapidly approaching tomorrow, we thought we’d try and stimulate those creative juices by digging out a couple of hidden gems written about the South End. The idea is simple: You will hear these songs, and, in a reckless fit of civic pride, become possessed by the impulse to submit a video entry to our contest by tomorrow. In case you forgot, here are the complete rules. Now, back to the South End-centric jams at hand. We put on our rubber gloves and shoved our hands way deep into the dustbin to pull these oldies but goodies out of the realm of the forgotten. For copyright reasons we can’t embed the videos directly, but click the links below to hear what musicians of yesteryear had to …

Hot Off the T: Bruins Hockey, White Rabbits, and Marathon Carbo-Loading

Five things to do in Boston this weekend.

Looking for a reason to get out and enjoy the city this weekend? No sweat. We've got you covered. 1) It’s playoff hockey season, and the Bruins are off to a good start, beating the Washington Capitals 1-0 in overtime Thursday night. It’s nigh impossible to get a ticket to Game 2 through legal channels, but you can take part in the playoff atmosphere around the TD Garden at several Boston landmarks, including The Fours, Sullivan’s Tap and Halftime Pizza. The game starts at 3 p.m. Saturday, but it’s a safe bet the revelry starts well before then. Take the Orange Line to North Station. 2) The good folks at Improv Asylum know how to bring the funny. You can check out their latest effort, “Siri, Can You Title Our Show For Us?” at the group’s …
