Labor Day Getaways: Laser Show, Wind Festival, Regatta and Greek Fest

Looking for a fast and fun day trip from the South End this Labor Day weekend? Summer in New England is filled with options. Check out what's happening this holiday weekend in a few favorite summer spots (note that weather forecasts subject to change):

Boston

WeatherSunny throughout the weekend, with a high near 85 on Saturday and near 80 on Sunday and Labor Day. Clear nights with lows from 60-65 until Monday night, when it'll be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers.

: Call Dustin Pedroia—it's time for a laser show. This multi-media event comes to the Boston Common Frog Pond on Sunday, Sept. 2, with festivities starting at 7:30 p.m. and the show scheduled for 9 p.m. Radio BDC, the new station streaming live on boston.com, will be programming a unique music track for the event, and hosting music on-site at the event. There will be food vendors and other surprises. This event is a collaboration between Friends of the Public Garden and The Skating Club of Boston.

Cape Cod and the Islands

Weather: Sunny every day with highs in the 70s, and mostly clear each night with lows in the high 60s until Monday night, when there's a chance of showers and a low around 64.

: On Saturday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., head to Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard for the Martha's Vineyard Wind Festival, a family event that incorporates all that is the Vineyard: visitors, the arts and summer sports. The festival not only offers a perfect setting for that last family summer picnic, but will also have many wind based events, including 'kids only' model sailboat races, kite construction and flying, frisbee games, kite boarding, and other flying contraptions, demonstrations, competitions and prizes. Kids can build their kites or flying contraptions in advance, or attend the free Vineyard Gazette kite-making workshop at the event.

Rhode Island

Weather: Sunny throughout the weekend with a high near 81 on Saturday eventually dropping to around 75 on Monday. Partly cloudy each night with lows in the mid-60s until Monday night, when there's a chance of showers.

Museum of Yachting (MoY) Classic Yacht Regatta: On Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2, the initial warning signal will sound at 11:55 a.m. each day for the 33rd running of this classic Newport event. The regatta marks the final stage of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge North American Circuit and honors the overall winner of the North American Circuit. There's also a Classic Yacht Parade at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at the harbor entrance, and Officine Panerai will host “” on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30-9:30 a.m., a casual morning meet and greet between local sailing devotees and the captains and crews of the competing crafts that offers community residents an inside look into the dedication, commitment and tireless effort of those participating in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge this year.

Seacoast New Hampshire

Weather: Sunny all weekend with a high near 86 on Saturday and approaching 80 on Sunday and Monday. Mostly clear each night with lows in the mid-50s until Monday night, which will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers.

Dover Greek Fest 2012: This annual Greek Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1 from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. There will be delicious Greek food and pastries, Greek coffee, a full bar, Greek dancing and live music by Ellas. Also, there will be special fun activities for kids include face painting, games and more, and raffles too. Presented by the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Dover, NH.
