The Boston Police Department on Friday issued a note of honor and mourning in response to the passing away of on-duty Officer Dennis Simmonds.

Simmonds, 28, was rushed to the hospital on Thursday after suffering a medical emergency, according to BPD. He reportedly collapsed in the early afternoon while at the police academy on Williams Avenue in Hyde Park, according to Universal Hub. Several officers and department personnel attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead late Thursday.

Boston Police said details on funeral arrangements will be released once they are finalized.

Simmonds served with the department for six years, having been appointed in 2008 and assigned to Boston District B-3. In 2012, he became a member of the Youth Violence Strike Force, Boston Police said.

Smmonds was honored last year for his efforts in coordination with the Watertown shootout involving the Tsarnaev brothers.
