Congratulations to the 2012 Super Bowl Champion – The Cathedral Panthers

With the school's first state football title in hand, the Cathedral basketball team is preparing to make another run for the state championship.

Congratulations to the 2012 Super Bowl Champion – The Cathedral Panthers. It is an honor and privilege to be a member of the Cathedral High School community. I have witnessed first-hand the dedication, determination, desire, and discipline of the student-athletes and coaches on our football team. Saturday’s Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium was a moment that our entire school community can treasure forever. Madison Park played great, and the only way our team could win was to be greater. The players were great and our coaching staff was great. At the helm of course is Coach Duane Sigsbury.

There may be a coach/athletic director in Massachusetts who works just as hard as Coach Sigsbury, but no one works harder. The Cathedral community at large is blessed to have a man that exemplifies sacrifice, love, and respect for his players, his students, and his colleagues. On a personal level, I am fortunate to see him as a father and husband. His love for family creates the core principles of who he is as a coach. Congratulations to a great coach, but most importantly congratulations to a great person.

With this incredible victory the winter season at Cathedral begins; and it begins quickly with only nine days before the first game - hardly a preseason. As head coach of the basketball team I trust in the resiliency of our student-athletes. I hope the good fortune of the football season will continue into the basketball season. I believe our identity as a basketball team will take time to develop. In our early season preparation, our coaching staff and players will be “process orientated,” rather than “results oriented.”

We have a great group of seniors who have really come into their own. They are showing the ability to lead the underclassmen by a most sincere example of what it means to be the best you can be. There are multiple upperclassmen on the football team who are honor roll students and a number of them will try out for the basketball team starting today. We have had thirty kids grades 9-12 at tryouts the past two weeks. The football players Coach Sigsbury has trained will bring new competition to our basketball program. Competition that is healthy and important in a young man’s life.

I am thrilled to begin the journey of the 2012-13 basketball season.
