New Bishop Ordained at Holy Cross Cathedral

New auxiliary bishop for Boston

Amid Christmas splendor at Holy Cross Cathedral, the Most Rev. Robert J. Deeley was ordained an auxiliary bishop of Boston on Friday afternoon, Jan. 4.  Cardinal O'Malley presided at the almost three hour liturgy that was attended by many visiting Bishops in Boston for the happy occasion and parishioners from throughout the archdiocese.

The new bishop was born in Cambridge and grew up in Watertown.  He comes from a family of five sons.  He prepared for the priesthood initially at St. John Seminary and completed his preparartion in Rome.  He was ordained on July 14, 1973 at Sacred Heart Church in Watertown by the late Cardinal Medeiros.  His career has included parish assignments in the Archdiocese and in Rome.

Prior to the end of the Mass, the new bishop walked around the Cathedral blessing the congregation and spoke a few words thanking all for taking part in the Mass.
