Children Sing for Peace: 2nd Annual Benefit Concert for Victims of Marathon Bombing

Boston City Singers is pleased to announce its 2nd annual concert to commemorate the spirit and strength of music as the community continues to heal from the tragedy at the 2013 Boston Marathon. The concert, entitled Children Sing for Peace, will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 7:00 pm at St. Mark’s Church, 1725 Dorchester Ave., Dorchester, MA 02124. The event is free, though donations will be gladly accepted.

Under the direction of Jane Money, Josh DeWitte, Dan Ryan and Kimani Lumsden, the concert will feature four Dorchester divisions of Boston City Singers including the World Rhythm Ensemble. “Singing helps to soothe a community personally and profoundly affected by last April’s tragedy,” said Ms. Money. A donation will be made to the Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation, honoring the young neighborhood boy who was killed at the Marathon finish line. The “foundation will be a legacy for Martin, allowing us to “pay it forward” and make a difference in ways that would make him proud but also be a source of healing and purpose,” recently said the Martin family. His sister Jane is a member of the Boston City Singers’ “Music on Wednesdays “ Chorus.

The hour-long concert aims to exemplify Martin’s ideals of peace and cooperation, which have been captured in the viral photograph of him holding a sign that reads, “No more hurting people—Peace.” This event, held in the heart of Dorchester, will bring community members together for an evening of uplifting music to celebrate the resilience of the community.

Boston City Singers is Boston’s largest youth chorus program dedicated to training and inspiring the musician, student, and ambassador in singers, ages 4-18. Founded in 1995 to provide opportunities for Boston’s inner-city youth, Boston City Singers now has over 500 singers who rehearse in several locations in Dorchester as well as Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Norwell, Weymouth and Cambridge (Cambridge Children’s Chorus). Auditions for new singers take place throughout the year and tuition scholarships are available based on need.
