Vibrator Giveaway Blocked at City Hall Now Happening in South End

After being met with opposition from the City of Boston about a free sex toy giveaway on City Hall Plaza, Trojan announced on Tuesday that it had switched the location of the Dec. 3rd promotion to the Boston Center for the Arts in the South End. 

During the promotion, two different types of vibrators will be freely distributed from hot dog carts, called "Pleasure Carts," inside the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts on Tremont Street. The giveaway will run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. -- or as long as supplies last. 

The controversy started in Boston back in mid-October, when Trojan first inquired about holding the giveaway on City Hall Plaza. The notion was met with opposition from Mayor Thomas Menino, with the city's chief of property management Michael Galvin calling the the distribution “an inappropriate and irresponsible use for the plaza," due to the amount of children and families in the area, according to the Boston Herald. 

“We’re happy that they were able to work something out where they could accommodate the company,” Menino's spokesperson Dot Joyce told the Boston Globe yesterday. “We feel it’s a much better location than City Hall Plaza, but still are concerned slightly about young children. But [we] are confident that the BCA and the marketing company were able to address those types of issues.”

The company already held a similar event in New York City earlier this year, that was also initially blocked from occuring due to permiting issues. However, that event went on, and more than 4,000 vibrators were handed out that day, according to the Huffington Post. Two other giveaways were held in Chicago and Washington D.C.

Organizers of the event noted the goal is to help bring the company's products to mainstream America. 

"The makers of Trojan Brand Products are helping mainstream the category by making high-quality vibrators accessible across a multitude of channels—at drugstores, grocery stores, mass merchandisers, online and in select adult stores—making it easier for couples to bring a higher level of fun and intimacy into their relationships," the company said in its announcement. "Bostonians can declare their right to pursue pleasure this holiday season."
