Things to Know in the South End Today, Oct. 16: South End Writes

Here are five things going on in the South End and nearby today.

1. Weather: The National Weather Service is predicting a cloudy morning that will clear up with temperatures that will reach 60 degrees. The evening will be clear and cool off to the mid-40s.

2. South End Writes: Join the Friends of the South End Library for a lecture and power-point presentation about Boston's Fairest, the first women who were allowed to join the Boston Police Department. They were given a badge, but no uniform, weapon or 'vehicle' so had to hail a cab to get the perps to the station. Join BPD archivist Margaret Sullivan and her colleague, Sgt. Detective Dr. Kim L. Gaddy at the South End Library at 6:30 p.m. See here for more info.

3. Yoga for the fam: If your little one know their downward dog from their friend Fido, join this interactive class that allows mothers to gently practice yoga while also engaging little ones in basic yoga postures and songs at Coco Baby (1636 Washington St.) The class, taught by Jess Meyer, runs on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. Cost is $160 for the 8 week session. See here for more information.

Free bikes for kids: In a partnership with Mayor Menino’s Boston Bikes and local business International Bicycles, the Boston Housing Authority will donate 65 bicycles to children ages 4 – 7 living in the Lenox Camden public housing development in the South End. All children will also receive a helmet and participate in a bike rodeo to learn safe bike handling skills.

5. Famer's market: Although it's a bit cooler outside, the Copley Square Farmer's Market is still going strong through November. Approximately 20 vendors will be on hand on opening day offering local and seasonal fruits and vegetables, baked goods, jams & jellies, cheese, meats, and much more.  Stop by today or Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. See here for more info.
