Grieg Files Appeal to Overturn Conviction, Sentence

A day after 61-year-old Catherine Greig received an 8-year prison sentence, her lawyer filed an appeal.

A day after Catherine Greig, the longtime companion of reputed mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, was , her lawyer filed an appeal in U.S. District Court in Boston. 

Greig pleaded guilty in March to to harboring a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud. Her lawyer, Kevin Reddington, had sought a sentence of 27 months, while the government recommended 10 years in prison. 

Reddington said that Greig could be released in 5 1/2 years, including credit for time she has spent awaiting trial and possibly good-behavoir time earned, according to the Boston Globe. Greig is being held at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, R.I.

Reddington said Tuesday that Greig did not regret spending her life on the run with Bulger, the Globe reported.

“She’s in love with the guy; if she could be with the guy right now, she’d be with him,’’ said Reddington. He said Greig does not believe that Bulger, who is scheduled to stand trial in November for 19 murders, is capable of such horrible crimes ... She absolutely stands by her man,’’ he said, according to the Globe piece.

Bulger is due to go to trial in November on 19 counts of murder.
