YouTube: Phantom Gourmet Takes On South End Restaurants

High marks for Stella, Masa, Toro and Mistral.

Back in October, the Phantom Gourmet's Dave Andelman highlighted four of his favorite South End restaurants -- , , and .

See the YouTube video above for Andelman's full take, or his quotes below for a quicker synopsis.

On :

"It's Italian, but it's not heavy red sauce Italian. It's a great mix of different things."

Andelman called Stella's spaghetti "heavenly" and "simple but perfect."

On :

"I go out to eat 1,000 times a year, and there can be a sameness to it, which is why you need places like Masa, where everything is just big and bold and flavorful and unusual."

On :

"Only one thing I don't like about Toro, they won't make reservations. Other than that, it's one of the best restaurants in Boston."

On :

"They've done the impossible. They've remained a super hot restaurant for 20 years."

Do you agree or disagree with Andelman's take? Do you have anything to add?

The noise volume in Stella is sooo loud that you cannot have a conversation. Toro service is very spotty. And I leave unsatisfied. Masa keeps you waiting for reservations and for your order. Mistral in my opinion far exceeds the others in service, quality of food and ambiance. Stella, Toro and Masa are not even in the same league as Mistral. Mistral's is fine dining; the others are not.

strange choices, except for toro, which is always good. the three best restaurants in the south end are the franklin cafe, coppa and oishii. has the reviewer not been to any of these?

The Metropolis Cafe is one of the best in the S.End. They need to do the right thing and add all the restaurants in the S. End . Phanthom Groumet needs to go and see for themselves and I'm sure the'll agree with me!! One of the coziest and best there is!
