Modern Furniture Store Arrives on Tremont Street

AVA Design will open at 659 Tremont Street within a month.

Formerly vacant commercial space on Tremont Street is empty no longer. AVA Design, a modern furniture store, has recently moved into the large corner storefront, formerly home to La Unica Furniture.

The store, which is in the "soft opening" stages, is slowly filling its floor space with inventory. On a recent afternoon, the manager’s desk, a few couches and chairs and a table were all that occupied the large, two-room store, which is painted a modern white with an accent wall of exposed brick.

AVA, which has one store in Atlanta, describes itself as “handmade American furniture.” All of its inventory is produced at a factory in North Carolina.

Adam Verboys, the showroom manager of the South End location, said one of the biggest advantages to selling handmade furniture is that everything can be customized.

“It’s great for designers who can come in with an idea for a piece and then have it created,” he said. “Homeowners could do the same thing, too, if they wanted.”

Resting on a large wooden table toward the back of the store are printouts of different chairs and tables that are available for order, with the fabrics and materials available. Another shipment of actual furniture should be arriving in the store soon.

Once complete, the showroom will feature modern handmade furniture that is a "combination of hardwood with metal" and has a "clean" aesthetic, Verboys said.

Though he hopes to have the majority of stock on display by mid-April, Verboys said lot of finishing touches still need to be made on the store and website, which will be launching soon. He is aiming for a May 1 grand opening.

AVA is currently open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The store is closed on Mondays.
