Dzhokhar and brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev are the prime suspects in the marathon bombing. Tamerlan was killed during a shootout with police when his brother, driving to escape, ran him over. Dkhokhar was later apprehended inside a boat in a Watertown back yard. According to the indictment, he wrote several messages in the boat's interior, accusing the United States of killing Muslims abroad among other things.

According to the indictment, Tsarnaev learned how to make the now-infamous pressure cooker bombs from Inspire Magazine, an al Qaeda publication. After bombing the marathon, killing three people and injuring scores more, the brothers then shot and killed MIT police officer Sean Collier, carjacked a driver, and had an extended gunfight with Watertown Police. Tamerlan was killed during that exchange. Dzhokhar was found later the next day inside the boat.
