Local Medical Student Receives $10,000 Scholarship from AMA Foundation

Boston resident Esther Han, a fourth year medical student at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM), was one of 21 rising fourth-year medical students across the nation to receive the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Awards. Recipients were nominated by their medical schools and chosen based upon academic achievement and financial need.  The AMA Foundation has awarded over $61 million in scholarships to deserving medical students since 1950. Han will receive a $10,000 tuition-assistance scholarship.

Han graduated from Duke University with dual degrees in Biological Anthropology & Anatomy and Spanish. She earned her Master’s in Public Health degree at George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.  As a Senior Health Care Analyst at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) in Washington, DC, Han worked on projects focused on promoting culturally and linguistically appropriate health care services, health care quality measurement, care coordination and patient engagement, co-authoring several publications. She continues to work with NCQA and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists on issues of patient safety and quality improvement.

Han has served as American Medical Student Association Health Policy Committee co-Chair, organizing various health policy and public health speakers and events in conjunction with organizations at the BU School of Public Health and has volunteered with the BUSM’s Partnering in Alzheimer's Instruction Research Study (PAIRS) program.
