South End Answers: Is Ellis Memorial Park Open to the Public?

Do you have a question about something happening in the South End? Ask it!

In this week's column of "South End Answers" a feature where we find the answers to your questions, reader Dan O. asked about the use of Ellis Memorial Park.

"As South End parents of a 16-month old, we use this park almost daily. Recently, handmade signs have been posted saying that 'due to safety' only Ellis School children can use the park from 10-12 every day. Is this park private, or can it be used by all?"

I reached out to the head of the Ellis Memorial Foundation, Leo Delany, who explained the park  was created by Ellis Memorial for the community with idea to create a safe place for the children who are in their care. The city owns the land, but Ellis Memorial built the playground through fundraising at a significant cost and regularly spends several thousand dollars to maintain it each year.

"We do take a more of an ownership status," said Delaney.

That said, Delany said the signs were not intended to cause a conflict with the neighborhood, and will be taken down and the park's intentions will be clarified.

Delany explained that there have been some discussions between staff and neighbors about letting strollers inside the park, which can be dangerous.

"There are 7 different Ellis classrooms that plan their visits to the park between the hours of 10 a.m.. 12 p.m.," Delany said. "We will be putting signs up but with different wording. The language will be more advisory about the times we are there and recommending the community try different times or be comfortable with all the children in the park, but also to respect the rules of keeping the strollers either outside the fence or tucked away in the corner."

Delany said anyone with further questions can contact her directly.

Dan , I hope this adequately answers your question! Thanks for asking.
