Neighborhood Concerns over Development Changes on St. George Street

The development was first approved for condos, but will now be rentals. There will be a community hearing on July 10th at the D-4 Police Station.

What was once the long-vacant Bethel Tabernacle Pentecostal Church on St. George Street – known fondly by some locals as the “Jesus Saves Church” - was torn down in 2011, supposedly to make way for condominiums.

But neighbors were surprised to learn recently that the project was actually be apartment rentals.

"I know there are a lot of abutters who are quite concerned about this and it’s all very different than it was supposed to be," said Courtney Trautman, president of the Blackstone/Franklin neighborhood association.

"A lot of money has been put into the parks by the city recently and as much as we need rental buildings in the city, we need condo buildings as well and we have a ton of rental in that area," said Trautman.

A community meeting has been scheduled on July 10th at the D-4 Police Station (500 Harrison Ave.) to discuss the changes to the project, including whether up to five condos should be priced below market-rate.

At the meeting will be members of the Blackstone-Franklin Neighborhood Association, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and Project Manager Peter Zagorianakos of Newton-based N&P Associates, LLC.
