Matt Carasone's Business Plan: Make Lemonade

Sure, it's hot. But Matt's here to tell you, it could be worse ...

Matt Carasone was born and raised in Clinton, then he moved to South Carolina for a bit, and now he's back, living in Madison. And he has something to say about the current heat wave. "This is like winter in South Carolina!" he said Thursday, while tending to his lemonade stand. "There's only one season there [he raises one finger here and waves it around for emphasis] and it's summer!"

Like any good businessman, Carasone is taking a bad situation () and making the best of it. He is, literally, taking lemons and making lemonade. And sweet tea. And he was selling both to hot and thirsty customers along Neck Road Thursday.

When business slowed down, he took out his copy of When My Name Was Keoko and dug into that. It's one of his summer reading assignments. Carasone will be a 7th grader at Polson Middle School next year and he plans to be ready on the first day of school. "It's so hard to find time to read!" he said, now waving the book in the air. "We're always going everywhere and doing all these things, so I figured this would be a good time to read."

Carasone's mom, Cindy, says Matt is a young man with a plan. And part of his business plan, she says, is raising enough money to buy a bike. Not just any bike, says Matt, he wants a Mongoose. "Sales are going well," he says. "I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it."

If the weather stays this hot, Matt is sure to do well with his stand. And, so far, it looks like it will.

Fantastic! If we had more young people like this who learned at a young age to work hard and save for what they want (instead of putting on a credit card), this country would be in a much better place! Good work, good luck, and be proud of your capitalistic endeavor!!!

This is a perfect business plan for a hot, steamy New England summer! Hope you make the money to buy THE bike, Matt!

Matt, CONGRATULATIONS! You're a wonderful young man and a great role model for your cousins! Can't wait to see you riding that new bike at Hammonasset. You rock! The Raccios

Hi Matt! Adam Coppola, who is riding across country with his wife Christy to raise money for bike-related charities, left this comment on our Facebook page: Adam wrote: "Hope you get that bike matt! We wish you were selling your lemonade along some of the long lonely and hot Montana roads we went through last week! Good luck! Feel free to post your lemonade sales times on our GIVE A BIKE facebook page and maybe you'll get some local cyclist to take the lemonade journey down neck road"
