Jason Moran, Fats Waller Dance Party

On Friday April 4th, the Celebrity Series of Boston will present jazz musician Jason Moran's Fats Waller Dance Party.

Emerging on the music scene in the late 90s, jazz pianist Jason Moran has established himself as an innovator of new directions for jazz as a whole. Moran and his group The Bandwagon have challenged the status quo and earned the reputation as “the future of jazz.” Moran is influenced by 20th-century artists, as seen on his chaotically refined third album Black Stars. Moran’s debut recording as a leader, Soundtrack to Human Motion, was released in 1999 to great critical praise.

Fats Waller was a prolific jazz pianist and composer recognized for his works of genius in the stride piano tradition. In this program, the ambitious and creative pianist Jason Moran once again challenges the status quo as he views Waller’s music through two lenses: the jazz piano trio and as contemporary dance music.
