Faneuil Hall Marketplace is participating in Celebrity Series of Boston’s “Play Me I’m Yours: Street Pianos Boston,” which has been touring internationally since 2008. In celebration of the Celebrity Series of Boston’s 75th season, the piano festival will run from September 27 through October 14. A total of 75 pianos will be located in and around Boston and Cambridge, one of which will be in Faneuil Hall. The artfully decorated pianos are for anyone to play at any time.
Reaching over two million people worldwide, 1,000 pianos have now been installed in cities across the globe, from New York to Sydney. The 1,000th worldwide street piano sits on Boston’s City Hall Plaza.
“We are delighted to be a part of this unique cultural project. The musical aspect of the festival fits right in with Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the artistic side of it is a great enhancement to our beautiful venue,” said Carol Troxell, President of Faneuil Hall Marketplace Merchants Association. “We invite everyone to come on down and give their best shot at tinkling the ivories and joining in this fascinating musical project.”
Faneuil Hall’s piano is distinct with blue musical hands above the keyboard, decorated by Gina Heeran and donated by Louis Gentile. The piano will be located in the North Market Area of Faneuil Hall Marketplace easily accessible for all would be and trained pianists. This temporary installation will add to the already lively area that features daily free performances by musicians, jugglers, acrobats and others.
“I’m thrilled to work with the City of Boston and our partner organizations to bring this public event to life,” said Gary Dunning, Celebrity Series President and Executive Director. “Bringing music to Boston is the core mission of the Celebrity Series, and we thank the Mayor and his offices for their support of Play Me, I’m Yours.”
“I want to congratulate Celebrity Series of Boston on 75 years of bringing the world's greatest performing artists to our city," Mayor Thomas M. Menino said. "The public piano festival, Play Me I'm Yours, will give residents and visitors a chance to make music in the streets of Boston through this exciting public art installation.”
