While I'm working on the second half of my post about the Great Boston Fire of 1872 and another post about the history behind the Christmas holiday, I thought I'd share some of my favorite South End images with you.

Browse through the images and their captions.  The images labeled as South End Streets Survey images were taken by the South End Historical Society in 1972.  The Society went around the neighborhood and took a picture of every extant 19th century building.  These images were used in the application to place the South End on the National Register of Historic Places.  We retain them at the Historical Society office. 

The unidentified man image was donated to us as a part of a series of cabinet cards and photographs.  This particular image is interesting because it was taken at a well-known portrait studio at 1030 Tremont St.  Gray Studio was open from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries.  Several of the other cabinet cards we received are also attributed to Gray Studio.

The Concord Baptist Church image was taken right after the November 1975 fire that damaged part of the roof.  It seems an appropriate time to post it, given the alterations and repairs that the new owner will be making to the building in order to convert it to condominiums.  He has to make extensive repairs to the roof and part of the exterior wall, issues arising from a combination of age and the 1975 fire. 

The trading card is one of several we have in our collection pertaining to piano factories.  The stereoscopic image is meant to be placed on a stereopticon to be viewed.
