Remembering "Blanco"

On Monday, candles burned at a makeshift memorial to Sierra, who lived with his parents in Villa Victoria. Photographs and handwritten notes were hung at the scene alongside a Puerto Rican flag, signed by friends and family.

A facebook page created in Sierra's memory had received hundreds of comments by Monday morning, with many sharing fond memories of time spent with the young man with the "big smile" and "crazy hair".

"Whether you were close friends with people or met them once or twice, you always made a great impression on them. I will never forget all of the great memories we have together," one friend wrote.

Others recalled playing basketball with Sierra at Blackstone Elementary and inside jokes formed during classes at South Boston High School, which Sierra graduated from in 2010. His teachers remembered him as a determined student who did what it took to succeed.

"I never thought I'd stay at school tutoring a kid until 10 p.m. so that he could graduate on time, but that's how dedicated you were to making your parents proud," one teacher wrote. "Everyone was proud of you on graduation day. I expected your second biggest day to be graduation from college, not this."

Sierra was attending a Boston area medical school at the time of his death.

Friends are creating sweatshirts and pins to commemorate Sierra's life. Details of a memorial service have not been released.
