South End Considered for Winter Street Sweeping Program

Pilot program would extend street sweeping program to include December and March.

The South End will see street sweeping during the colder months if the city goes forward with plans to expand its winter street sweeping pilot program to the neighborhood.

City Councilor Bill Linehan, who represents a portion of the South End, said he recommended the neighborhood be considered for the pilot program, which expands the street sweeping schedule to include the months of December and March.

“When the North End got it I asked if the South End could be the next pilot location and they’ve agreed to do that,” Linehan said in a recent interview.

The details have yet to be ironed out, Linehan said, but the city will leave flyers on cars to notify vehicle owners of any added street cleaning dates. There’s also the issue of inclement weather, which could disrupt the extended schedule.

“If there’s snow on the ground they don’t [sweep] but if there isn’t, they do,” Linehan said. “So there’s a good chance that we’ll be getting streets cleaned right up through December.”
