New Fence Donated to Union United Methodist Church

A generous donation will allow the church to extend its wrought iron fence around the property.

The decorative wrought iron fence surrounding the eastern half of the will be extended around the entire building thanks to the generosity of an interested resident.

A shorter version of the four-foot fence will be installed along the Rutland Square corner of the church, protecting the grounds from wandering pets and pedestrians, church members announced. The fence will be paid for through a donation from Randolph Fuller, a Boston resident who also funded the fence surrounding the rest of the church and .

At a South End Landmark District Commission meeting this month, architect Robert Adams presented plans for a modified version of the existing fence, measuring about half the height, to extend around the Rutland Square corner. The lower fence would keep people off the lawn while preserving the connection with the steeple for passersby, he said.

The smaller fence will incorporate the same design as the lower portion of the current fence – a floral pattern that mirrors the stained glass windows of the church.

Commissioners approved the project under the condition that Adams explore raising the height of the fence along Columbus Avenue to appear uniform with the existing portion.

Church representative Ruth Brown expressed gratitude toward Fuller, who approached the church himself about extending the fence just a year after the previous portion was finished. 

“We’re very happy that the donor has come forward,” she said. “We wanted [the fence] to go all the way around. The church is very happy.”
