Local Restaurant Owner Hospitalized After Saugus Tanker Crash

Jacob Wirth owner W. Kevin Fitzgerald, who was seriously burned on Saturday in a tanker truck crash in Saugus, continues to be treated in the hospital.

The daughter of a Hamilton man seriously injured in a Saturday morning tanker crash in Saugus said Monday her father is still hospitalized.

W. Kevin Fitzgerald is a prominent businessman and restaurant owner in the Boston area. He has owned Jacob Wirth, a popular restaurant and bar in the theater district, since 1975. He also owns several parking lots in the Boston area under the name Fitz-Inn Parking and is an attorney. He is a trustee emeritus at Northeastern University, where he earned his law degree in 1977. He lives on Woodland Mead in Hamilton.

His daughter, Meaghan Fitzgerald, reached on her cell phone, said she had no more updates other than what had been published so far. On Sunday, the Boston Globe reported that Fitzgerald underwent emergency surgery on Saturday and was in serious condition at . No more updates were available on his condition Monday from a Mass General spokesman.

Meaghan Fitzgerald, his only child, said she might have further updates about her father’s recovery later in the week.

On Monday, the Hamilton Board of Selectmen was putting together a card sending its wishes to the Fitzgerald family.

W. Kevin Fitzgerald suffered serious burns when his vehicle became involved in a crash and fire on Route 1 northbound just after 2 a.m. on Saturday. A tanker truck carrying about 11,000 gallons of gasoline flipped and caught fire. The truck driver died in the crash and three other people received minor injuries. The fire also spread to several nearby business and a home and shut down the road for a large part of Saturday.

State Police said on Monday that an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
