Buttery Cafe Opening Second South End Location

The South End Buttery will be expanding its Union Park café and opening a second location in the neighborhood this fall, according to a local property owner.

Paul Duffy, who owns the building at 37 Clarendon Street formerly occupied by , said the Buttery will be moving in September 1. 

“I’m really excited about this,” Duffy said on Tuesday. “I’m excited about the activity.”

The Clarendon Street location will serve baked goods and sandwiches along with coffees and teas, Duffy said. All of the food prep will be done at the Union Park location, which is expanding its kitchen. The absence of kitchen smells should be a relief to neighbors, he added.

“A cheeseburger smells good the first day but after 10 days it’s terrible,” he acknowledged, adding that he turned down several potential tenants in an effort to fill the space correctly. Duffy has lived above the storefront for over 40 years.

“I turned town a lot of hair salons, a lot of nail salons, a lot of real estate agencies,” he said.

In addition to café items, the Clarendon Street space will also house a small market, with upscale grocery items like olive oil available for purchase, Duffy said. The Buttery’s lease on the space begins September 1, and business should begin in November. 

The Ellis Neighborhood Association will discuss the project at a meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the City Year building on Columbus Avenue.
